betonTab Betting Basics

Swingers, Trifectas, Pick6, Jackpots – it can all get a bit overwhelming and we understand that! So, we’ve put together a few points to hopefully get you started on your way to placing the bets that are right for you.

Fixed odds vs Tote betting

This type of betting is offered for all sports on Bet on Tab under the following menu items:

Horse Racing
Soccer Zone
Sport
Numbers

Fixed odds betting means that your potential profit or loss is fixed by the odds offered by the bookmaker.

Example: If you were to place a bet of R100 on the favourite in a soccer game to win at 1/5 (or 1.20 as shown in decimal odds), the amount you could return if you win is fixed at R20 and the return of your stake. The amount you could lose is also fixed at R100.

What are the benefits of Fixed Odds betting?
  • Hundreds of fixed odds markets across a diverse range on local and international sporting events
  • Live Betting betting markets, available while the game is on – visit Live Betting here
  • Accumulator and multiple betting options available

Unlike the bookmaker who offers you fixed odds, the tote offers you a pool bet. This type of bet pools together the money received from all the bets on a particular race and distributes a share to each of the winners. Tote or pool betting works similar to the National Lottery.

Exotic bets can be found on the tote under the names Exacta, Trifecta, Swinger, Quartet, Double, Pick 3, Bipot, Place Accumulator and Jackpot. While straight bets all involve one horse, exotic bets involve 2 or more horses. The exotics are obviously harder to win but the payoff on exotic bets is much higher due to the risk to reward ratio, bigger risks, bigger rewards!

Minimum Stake on Tote = R6.00

Here is a quick explanation on the various Tote Bet Types:

win

Win

Bet on a horse to win

Bet on a horse to finish in the placings. Note that the number of horses qualifying for place payouts depends on the number of runners in that particular race.

Five runners or less: No Place Betting
Six to seven runners: 1st, 2nd places
Eight to 15 runners; 1st, 2nd and 3rd places
16 or more runners; 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places

Combines a Win and Place bet. You collect the Win payout if the horse you bet on finishes first. You will get the Place if the horse finishes in 2nd, 3rd or 4th place, depending on the number of runners in that race. The same amount will be bet for the Win and the Place.

This bet type gives you the chance to win big for a small amount. It allows you to make Win or Place bets on horses in different races, at the same race meeting, kind of like an accumulator bet.

Probably the most popular of the exotic bets! This bet allows you to pick 2 horses and you will win if the 2 horses you’ve chosen are in one of the first 3 places. Either 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 3rd.

Bet on the horses to finish in first and second place, in that exact order. You can have a single, permutation or a boxed exacta:

  • Single: choose 1 horse for first and 1 horse for second
  • Permutation: choose any number of horses for first and second
  • Boxed: choose 2 or more horses. You will collect a share of the pool if the horses chosen include the first and second finishers.

*The more horses you choose, the smaller your winning dividend will be as this lowers the risk.

Choose the winners in the 1st and 2nd legs/races that comprise the Double. A Double can be taken on all consecutive races at a particular meeting.

Bet on the horses to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In the exact order

Bet on the horses to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the exact order.

Choose the winners of any 3 consecutive races. One horse or more can be chosen in each of the three races.

Choose a horse, or horses, to finish FIRST or SECOND in each of the 6 races that comprise the BiPot (Legs 1 to 6). You can win the bet many times.

Example:
You choose one horse in each of Legs 1 to 4 and two horses in each of Legs 5, 6 and 7. If all choices finish in the first 2, payout is won eight times (1x1x1x1x2x2x2 = 8).

Choose a horse, or horses, to finish FIRST, SECOND or THIRD in each of the 7 races that comprise the Place Accumulator (Legs 1 to 7). You can win the bet many times.

Example:
You choose one horse in each of Legs 1 to 4 and two horses in each of Legs 5, 6 and 7. If all choices finish in the first 3, payout is won eight times (1x1x1x1x2x2x2 =8).

Choose the winners of all 4 races that comprise the Jackpot (Legs 1 to 4). One horse or more can be chosen in each of the 4 races.

Choose the winners of all 6 races that comprise the Pick 6 (Legs 1 to 6) and you can win a fortune!

One horse or more can be chosen in each of the 6 races.
